Ernest Mayanja decided to take advantage of the mammoth crowd at Namugongo martyrs shrine to make some quick money entertaining people.
Mayanja runs an orphanage and three years ago, he started a dance troupe in which the orphans perform and he uses the earnings to contribute to their tuition.
However, this year’s earnings were a fraction of what he usually makes, a fact that Mayanja blames on tough economic times in soeciety.
Marked as one of the holiest days on the Christian calendar in Uganda, the martyrs' day anniversary is also an opportunity for traders to sell merchandise.
From vendors selling clothes, to telecommunication companies attempting to gain traction with clients and eateries selling a blend of cuisines, the area was turned into a marketplace.
However, many of them revealed that the purchases were low compared to previous years.
The traders were also affected by the high charges imposed on them and the overzealous security agents who were disruptive.
