Christian faithfuls have been implored to stand for the truth at all times if they are to fight the current social evils like corruption and bad leadership, which continue to afflict the Ugandan society.
The Bishop of Kiyinda Mityana Anthony Zziwa who led mass at the Namugongo martyrs Catholic shrine said many Christians have fallen short of standing for the truth. Zziwa premised his sermon on this year’s Martyrs’ Day celebrations theme The truth will set you free. Over 10,000 pilgrims came from Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan and as far as Iran.
This year’s 3rd June celebrations mark exactly 130 years since a group of 45 Anglican and Catholic Martyrs were killed on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga. Since they were solemnly proclaimed as saints in 1964 by Pope Paul V1, pilgrims flock to the Namugongo shrine every year to honour the martyrs.
This year, the pilgrims had taken their seats at the Catholic shrine as early as 6:00am shortly before the Kiyinda Mityana Diocese choir struck a chord with pilgrims with a spectacular performance.
This year’s theme, ‘The truth will set you free’ formed the basis the day’s sermon delivered by Mityana Diocese Bishop Anthony Zziwa. The Kiyinda Mityana Diocese is one of the areas where the seeds of the catholic faith planted by Noah Mawaggali, Ambrose Kibuka, Luke Banabakintu and Matiya Mulumba sprouted.
The celebrations were attended by politicians, cultural leaders, and foreign dignitaries. President Yoweri Museveni who is currently away in Germany was represented by Vice President Edward Ssekandi who spoke of government’s commitment to improve religious tourism.
All the speakers spoke of the need to emulate the martyrs if they are to strengthen their faith in Christ.
