Lake Kyoga fish stock depleted

Fishermen on Lake Kyoga have curved out territory in the waters, as the fish stock in the lake continues to dwindle.

Fish is lake Kyoka is getting depleted, and the residents living around Lake Kyoga have attributed this reduction of fish to illegal fishing methods. 

"We have failed to earn a living from here and we have resorted to farming", a local in the area stated.

The problem is bigger than just illegal fishing methods.

According to the locals, some individuals are claiming ownership to certain portions of the lake. Fishermen on Lake Kyoga, and have curved out territory in the waters, as the fish stock in the lake continues to dwindle.

"They get branches of trees and sand, and create a plot", stated another local. 

In February this year, UPDF soldiers were deployed to curb illegal fishing on Lake Kyoga.

"Our operations have been mostly held on the landing sites", stated the leader of the UPDF enforcement Captain Bennon Namanya.

For generations, many families have depended on the lake for their livelihoods but with the current state, it is not clear what the future holds for them.
