A heavy deployment of police and army early on Thursday quelled a demonstration by opposition youth activists in downtown Kampala . The police used teargas to disperse the opposition youth activists after which a combination of army and police men scoured the commercial buildings around Kampala's old taxi park to search for some of the demonstrators who had taken refuge there.
Business came to a standstill in this usually busy part of the capital as traders, street vendors and boda-boda cyclists abandoned their work to get away from what they feared could be a prolonged altercation between the law enforcers and the demonstrators.
