Soldiers from the Special Forces Command, which provides security to the president, have deployed at Centenary Park in Kampala.

Soldiers from the Special Forces Command, which provides security to the president, have deployed at Centenary Park in Kampala.

On Thursday, the parliamentary committee investigating the controversy on the leisure park lease obtained a concession from Inspector General of Police Gen. Kale Kayihura that the police would oversee the demolitions at a yet to be established date.  Parts of the park are set to be demolished to pave way for government projects.

The Uganda National Roads Authority is set to construct a flyover across parts of the park while National Water and Sewerage Corporation also seeks to use part of the park land to lay water pipes to boost supply.

Meanwhile, businessman Amooti Nyakana of Nalongo Estates has accused the Committee of Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises of unfairness and bias in seeking to resolve the saga. He also accused Kampala Capital City Authority and its Executive Director of being unprofessional and taking issues personally.

However, KCCA spokesperson Peter Kaujju says the Nalongo Estates lease on Centenary park expired and KCCA was doing everything within the law.

Officials from National Water and Sewerage Corporation who were supposed to start laying pipes in the area revealed that they have already been given the green light to carry out their work.

The Committee on Commissions Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises is expected to meet again on the 18th of this month to discuss the matter further.
