Members of of the East African Legislative Assembly have differed on the proposal to conduct their plenary sessions both in Swahili and English in future sessions.
The proposal to adopt Swahili was brought by Kenyan representative Abubaker Zein who also called for amendments in the assembly’s laws to bar persons who cannot speak Swahili from contesting for positions in the East African Legislative Assembly.
However the proposal met resistance from Ugandan legislators who argued that Swahili is yet to be embraced by most Ugandans.
