Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has said he will not wait to swear in for his new term before he returns to his office at City Hall.
Lukwago told NTV that next week, a team of his aides will be sent to the Lord Mayor's chambers to make the final preparations for his return to office.
However, the spokesperson of Kampala Capital City Authority Peter Kauju says Lukwago and his aides are better advised to stay way from the office for now until the new term begins.
On Tuesday, Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago sent his aides to the Mayor’s office at City Hall to start preparations for his return following his re-election last month but the aides were prevented from accessing the office.
In an interview with NTV at the office that houses his private law firm in Kampala, Lukwago said he will soon send another team to City Hall to do the final preparations.
Kaujju says Lukwago, like any other recently elected leader in the city, can only legally occupying his offices after he are sworn in on 20th May.Lukwago, a former Kampala Central MP who was elected Lord Mayor in 2011 with a decisive majority, has been out of office since November 2013 when he was controversially impeached by city councillors over incompetence and abuse of office.
Lukwago argues that KCCA is illegally keeping him out since no law bars him from occupying the office.
He adds that the Attorney General did not appeal the ruling of High Court Judge Lydia Mugambe, said Lukwago should be reinstated. However, KCCA publicist Kaujju says Lukwago must respect the orders of Court of Appeal Justice Steven Kavuma who overturned Justice Mugambe’s ruling.
