The controversial academic who presented her findings at a public event in the university says public nude protests are only condemned by customary and religious norms.

According to a research paper presented by Makerere University law don, Professor Sylvia Tamale, Uganda has no specific law that criminalizes nude protests in public.

The controversial academic who presented her findings at a public event in the university says public nude protests are only condemned by customary and religious norms.

The research also underscores the fact nude protests date back to pre-colonial times, especially in West African societies.

Tamale's research comes in the wake of a number of nude protests all over Uganda in the recent past, with the most prominent being a group of elderly women from Amuru district protesting during a land conflict and Makerere University researcher Stella Nyanzi who stripped to her underwear in protest against what she called unfair treatment by Prof. Mahmood Mamdani, the director of the Makerere Insitute of Social Research.
