A fire has gutted Jinja’s Napier market leaving more than 2,000 vendors in tears after their merchandise and property went up in smoke.
The Friday night fire, the fifth since the market was built, was eventually put out by the police fire brigade. The market suffered major fires in 2009, 2010, 2011and 2012.
Jinja District Police Commander Felix Mugizi said the narrow paths in the market made it difficult for the fire trucks to access the market.
The vendors, most of whom spent the night in the cold, were devastated after examining the damage on Saturday morning.
