Chief Justice Bart Katureebe said it should find a way of reducing disparities in sentencing where some judicial officers abuse their discretion.
A committee chaired by the Principal Judge Yorokamu Bamwine has embarked on a process of reviewing non-capital offenses’ sentencing guidelines before they are adopted by Courts of Judicature.
At the commissioning of the 17-member committee in Kampala, Chief Justice Bart Katureebe said it should find a way of reducing disparities in sentencing where some judicial officers abuse their discretion.
The Chief Justice also said the Judiciary and Directorate of Public Prosecution are in talks to see how to expeditiously handle the cases of over 26,000 inmates on remand in various prisons in Uganda.
