Ritual murders became so rampant in Buyikwe in 2013 that foreign media called the district the capital of ritual murder, which further demonised the district district that was struggling to shed the association with such a reviled practise.

Following calls for action from residents, civil society and the political class, some individuals rose up and decided to do something to end the practise of ritual murders that had long blighted the district.

Most important at this time, many traditional healers, who had long been associated with fuelling the ritual murders, decided to come to the fore and disassociate themselves from those who were bringing disrepute to there trade by engaging in ritual murders.

However, the district's residents did not trust the sincerity of the traditional healers towards wanting to bring an end to ritual murder and they had to prove themselves.

Part 3 of the series "Ritual child murders, Buyikwe’s break from the past", looks at traditional healers and spiritualists trying to fight against the practise.
