Family sues hospital for holding patient over unpaid bills

Patrick Obiga was billed Shs38 million for medical care but his family only managed to pay Shs20 million in installments.

The family of a 30 year old man involved in an accident have sued International Hospital Kampala for allegedly detaining him against his will at the hospital over an unpaid bill.

Rose Obiga has sought legal intervention with the help of the Centre for Health Human Rights and Development-CEHURD, on behalf of her ailing brother Patrick Obiga after negotiations with International Hospital Kampala yielded no results.

Patrick Obiga a security guard, who has now spent 5 extra days from his discharge date at the hospital, was admitted to the intensive care unit of IHK on the 4th of August after he got an accident while on duty.

According to Rose, on the 22nd of August, her brother was recommended for discharge from the hospital and billed Shs38 million for the medical care but his family only managed to pay Shs20 million in installments.

Brenda Naluyima, the senior manager marketing and communications at IHK, says they the hospital was shocked to learn that it had been sued. She adds that the hospital is open to dialogue and was waiting on the family to provide the relevant documentation and have Patrick leave the hospital.
