It has been a busy week for the petitioners, respondents and five justices of Constitutional court as they started work on the petition challenging the removal of the presidential age limit from the constitution, the extension of the term of office for president,MPs and local leaders from five to seven years, and the restoration of the presidential term limits. As the court prepares for the second week of the case, NTV talked to the Deputy Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny Dollo on his experiences during the four days’ proceedings at Mbale High Court.Owiny Dollo who heads the panel of five Justices, says the level of security will be maintained even as court goes into the cross examination session. On the questions about the independence of this court, the Deputy Chief Justice says the decisions made will be based entirely on legal arguments in court and not political sentiments.Dollo has also responded to reports that the media will be barred from the proceedings during the cross examination of 10 witnesses who include the Chief of Defence Forces Gen David Muhoozi. There have been moments of laughter and light banter during the week- some on matters of intellect, use of legalese, and the conditions of the court.
Justice Owiny Dollo has given assurance that Mbale High Court will be open to the public during the cross examination of witnesses next Tuesday
