The farmers blame the outbreak of the virus on Operation Wealth Creation officials whom they accuse of allegedly supplying them with infected cassava stems.
Jacob Oluka, the Ngora District Agricultural officer, is appealing for government intervention because, according to him, up to 75 percent of cassava gardens in the district are now infected.
However, the NAADS Executive Director Dr.Samuel Mugasi blames the outbreak on farmers who mix the healthy stems supplied by the government with others from unknown sources in a bid to increase quantity.
Cassava is one of the staple food crops in the region and therefore the outbreak of the brown streak virus has raised concerns of food shortages in the months to come.
The Ngora County MP David Abala is also appealing for government intervention in ensuring the outbreak is checked before it gets worse.
The Cassava brown streak virus affects the Cassava stems and roots by causing them to rot.
The districts of Bukedea, Serere and Katakwi have also been affected by the outbreak.
