Robert Kwesiga the General Secretary of Red Cross Uganda says they will continue to provide assistance until the area is out of danger.

Several families in Bundibugyo district in western Uganda are still living in camps for the internally displaced following heavy rains in May that devastated their houses and plantations.

At least 11 people were killed as heavy rain pounded Bundibugyo district in May. The downpour caused landslides and floods leaving hundreds of people with no option but seek shelter in camps for the internally displaced.

Many of these people were like Jafania Gwomeye who lost his house along with all his life’s belongings. Because he has no permanent home now, Jafania is living in a camp for internally displaced people , separated from his wife and family.

Apart from the tragedy of losing their homes, the people in the camps have difficulty finding food as their gardens were flooded and washed away.

Uganda Red Cross Society has responded to the humanitarian crisis affecting Jafania and other like him by delivering assistance to the IDP camps.

Robert Kwesiga the General Secretary of Red Cross Uganda says they will continue to provide assistance until the area is out of danger.

Bundibugyo’s district chairman Ronald Mutegeke has pledged that government will build a proper drainage system that will deter flooding and allow the water to run when the rains come.

Bundibugyo is one of the districts that are badly affected when it comes to the rainy season. The worst-hit places are Bubukwanga, Bukhonzo, Humya, and Bumadu village in Bundibugyo town council.
