The Inspector General of Police Gen Kale Kayihura says those criticizing the Uganda Police Force want to give the impression of an institution in crisis, which is not the case.
Kayihura believes Police should not be judged in isolation from the society in which they operate.
His remarks come a week after the arrest of the Former Buyende District Police Commander Muhammad Kirumira who accused the police of working with criminals.
Kirumira has since been charged before the police disciplinary committee on various charges, including indiscipline.
At the beginning of this year, the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence arrested some members of the motorcyclists’ organisation Boda Boda 2010 for their alleged involvement in the murder of the former Case Hospital accountant Francis Ekalungar
Kayihura had often sided with Boda Boda 2010 as an organisation that has helped the police in maintaining law and order, especially in breaking up opposition protests in the city.
The IGP says that though the Police Force has some wrong elements within its ranks, those criticizing it are not clean either.
Kayihura made the remarks on Friday morning during the passing out ceremony of 58 police officers who had finished a four months Intermediate Command and Staff Course at the police training school in Bwebajja, Wakiso District.
At the same event, the State Minister of Internal Affairs Obiga Kania emphasized the need for training especially in the promotion and posting of police officers.
Former Kampala Metropolitan Traffic Police Commander Norman Musinga emerged as the best overall student.
