A power outage has left major parts of Uganda, leaving most parts of the country in a total blackout.

The blackout has affected Kampala, Kabale, Entebbe, Mbarara, Jinja, and most of the major towns in the country.

According to power distributor UMEME, the outage was caused by a network interruption and their team is working with the Uganda electricity transmission company limited (UETCL) to restore supply.

The blackout also appears to have affected Kenya where Uganda supplies electricity, with blackouts reported in parts of Kenya around the same time.

Speaking to the Daily Monitor, the Corporate Affairs Manager of the Uganda electricity generation company limited (UEGCL) Mr Simon Kasyate blamed the origins of the outage on Kenya.

"Because of the interconnection with the Kenyan grid, when the problem happened in Kenya, Uganda had to be affected.""We have disconnected Uganda from the Kenyan grid so as to connect Uganda independently and as I talk to you now, power is already restored in some parts of the country," Kasyate said.
