Butchers operating in Kampala under the Uganda abattoirs Union today met with Kampala Capital City Authority officials seeking a clarification over recent operations in which a number of butcheries were closed over for failing to meet health and hygiene requirements.
The butchers wanted KCCA to show proof that their meat was unhygienically handled and contaminated.
In the meeting, the KCCA director of health inspection and education Dr Emilian Ahimbisibwe said, during the operation, only those using drugs to kill flies were arrested and none of them was found preserving their meat with chemicals.
He said the operations will continue in a bid to protect the population from consuming harmful meat.
On Thursday last week, two people were arrested in an operation to rid the market of butchers using harmful chemicals to keep flies away.
Speaking to the media, Members of the Abattoirs union said the operation has left them counting losses due to the negative perception the operations had created amongst the consumers.
They insisted that the meat sold from the city’s abattoirs is inspected and checked by ministry of agriculture official
