The pastoralists had caused tensions with local communities as their cows destroyed farms and increased land disputes among families and clans.

A Joint security committee from the district of Northern Uganda, Oyam and Adjumani has given Nomadic Herdsmen up to end of February to leave northern Uganda. The meeting follows directives given by President Yoweri Museveni late last year.

The Minister for Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, Vincent Sempiija who was at the Council Hall in Gulu pronounced an end to nomadic farmingThe meeting was also attended by the RDCs, LCV Chairpersons, top Security officials from the UPDF, Police and the Balalo herdsmen.

The announcement gives the herdsmen two months to prepare for the vaccination of their animals before they can set them on Lorries for home.

The Minister says the government will purchase vaccines by the end of January to prevent the spread of diseases during transportation.

District leaders want those who claim to have entered the district legally to show evidence permission granted.

A survey conducted by the UPDF 4th Division Commander Brig. Emmanuel Kanyesigye confirmed that there are over 20,000 cows in northern Uganda.

The pastoralists had caused tensions with local communities as their cows destroyed farms and increased land disputes among families and clans.

Last year the Gulu Chairman Martin Mapenduzi went out of his way to chase the herdsmen by force, but this didn't solve the outstanding issues.

It remains to be seen whether the herdsmen will yield to the directive by the President.
