It is just a couple of days into 2018 and for many people, the celebrations that marked the entry into the new year are still very fresh in their minds.
Thousands of Ugandans marked the beginning of the year by watching fireworks displays from different venues around the country as has become the tradition in recent years.
However, what many people do not know is where the fireworks they enjoy come from.
Chances are that any fireworks that are set off anywhere in Uganda are supplied by Sanjiv Patel, who is the main importer and distributor of fireworks in the country.
Sanjiv, who has been in the business since 1992, has an in-depth knowledge of the history of using fireworks in the country.
He says he first fireworks display in Uganda was during independence celebrations as the British were handing over control of the country to Ugandan administrators.
Sanjiv says former President Obote later banned the use of fireworks.
Sanjiv still has vivid memories of the time President Idi Amin expelled Ugandan Asians.
Sanjiv returned to Uganda in the early 90s and started fireworks distribution as a charity which he later registered as a business in 1997 and it has since become a profitable organization employing youths and allowing others to start their own businesses.
Cities like Sydney in Australia spend as much as 1.5 million US Dollars on fireworks displays that can last over 10 minutes, something that is unimaginable for most organizers of fireworks displays in Uganda.
Sanjiv imports most of his fireworks from China and he says he supplied at least 250 people in the days leading to the new year.
The Police spokesperson Emilian Kayima says the strict regulations governing fireworks are meant to protect people from those who might misuse them, like criminals and terrorists.
For Ugandans who enjoy watching fireworks, they can only hope that the happiness brought by the displays can last a little longer in future.
