X-MAS IN PRISON: Animals slaughtered as prison tradition gets underway

Frank Baine, Uganda Prisons Service spokesperson said the commissioner general Johnson Byabashaija had availed cows, goats, sheep and chickens to be distributed to detention centers around the country.

The slaughter session began early. By 6 am, staff and inmates at Luzira prisons were gathered at the prison farm.  

The butchers were at hand to oversee the slaughter but some of the animals gave them a hard time.

 

Frank Baine, Uganda Prisons Service spokesperson said the commissioner general Johnson Byabashaija had availed cows, goats, sheep and chickens to be distributed to detention centers around the country. 

 

Baine explains how Uganda Prisons is able to provide these animals for slaughter on an annual basis. 

Isma Luyima has been in prison for 11 years. He was sentenced to 20 years for robbery.

The inmates spoke about what they miss on Christmas because they are in prison.

 

The event is organised to accommodate different social and religious backgrounds and to let inmates feel that being in prison is not the end of the world.
