The UK government has donated secure gun storage equipment to the Uganda Police force to help keep the guns from the wrong hands.
The equipment was handed over to police officers in Tororo district by a member of the British Peace Support team. It will be distributed to different police stations around the country.
Police stations and police posts in the various parts of the country have been attacked by suspected criminals and some officers taking charge have been killed and guns stolen. Some of the stolen guns have been used by criminals to terrorise the public.
While handing over the equipment; Phil Figgins, of the British Peace Support Team, said the donation was given in reaction to the recent issues of misuse of guns and loss of weapons that have been reported in some security locations in the country. Figgins says, apart from supporting the country with storage equipments, the British government is training officers in charge of armories and will also construct fully fledged armories.
Police officers say the donation was timely given the challenges of gun theft that have rocked the country.
The gun boxes are said to be multi purpose and can be used by security during mobile patrol and operations.
