Pupils at a school in Kasese fled from officials coming to carry out registration of school children after a rumours of an ulterior motive behind the exercise spread around the school.
Authorities say a stranger walked up to pupils of Kaghando Primary School and told them that President Museveni had ordered the ongoing registration exercise as a pretext for collecting their teeth to use in performing rituals.
The registration exercise, which is being conducted by the National Identification and Registration Authority is meant to facilitate the issuance of National Identification Numbers and Identity Cards.
The headteacher and staff of Kaghando Primary were worried about the disappearance of their students. The area LC3 chairperson Sam Bagenda confirmed the incident and promised to search for the man who spread the rumours.
The strange incident has also sucked in the Resident District Commissioner of Kasese who has embarked on a sensitisation exercise to promote the government programme.
The District Police Commander of Hima Division, Sam Suubi, has assured the public that the rumours are completely false and that the authorities are doing everything to bring those responsible for causing the panic to book.
