About 15,000 sim-card vendors have been rendered jobless after Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) slapped a ban on the sale and registration of sim cards on the streets to eliminate their use by criminals .
Some of the vendors NTV spoke to argue that the ban is unfair because most of the vendors were willing to register new subscribers using a national ID and passport, the only valid documents allowed by the regulator.
The managing director of Airtel Uganda, Anwar Soussa, has told NTV that telecom companies will further engage UCC and other stakeholders to allow vendors register people on the streets.
