Nadine Magdalene from Amudat district is one out the 30% of girls across Uganda, according to a report by an NGO Water Aid, who miss school days during their menstrual periods.

Girls like her face a number of challenges going through school. These range from lack of sanitary pads to taunting by fellow pupils during their menstrual periods thus affecting their attendance or even performance in school .

Water Aid recently launched a project dubbed WASH or water, sanitation and health. It focuses on improving the hygiene of women and girls in communities.

There is an ongoing debate on whether government should provide sanitary pads to girl to improve menstrual hygiene and en sure they remain in school. A women rights activist and entrepreneur Barbie Kyagulanyi says there are innovative ways to go around the pads issue.

Water Aid Uganda has also embarked on improving the health care system, with emphasis on maternal health which they note has performed poorly in the country.
