Thousands of people today flocked to Mucwini sub-county in Kitgum district to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the death of Uganda’s former Archbishop Janani Luwum.
The huge numbers of people included delegations of civic, cultural, political and religious leaders, all of who converged trekked at Wii Gweng village, the birthplace of the late Janani Luwum.
One of the speakers at the function, Rt. Rev. Michael Nasri, Bishop of Rochester Diocese in the United Kingdom, called on the Church not to remain silent in times of persecution.
Former UPC leader Olara Otunnu, one of the organizers, told the congregation that there is a plan to develop Luwum’s burial site into a shrine. The Vice President Edward Ssekandi called on spiritual leaders to rebuke bad leadership and strengthen the faith of those who are poor at heart.
Arch Bishop Janani Luwum was murdered in the regime of former President Idi Amin Dada in 1977 for speaking against tyranny, and this is the kind of boldness Christians have been called upon to emulate.
